Truk Lagoon, Federated States of Micronesia—Truk (a.k.a. Chuuk) was an Imperial Japanese Navy base during World War II. Considered second only to Pearl Harbor in strength, the U.S. saw this base as a major threat and, on February 17, 1944, a 2-day aerial bombing campaign known as Operation Hailstone began. More than 50 naval vessels and merchant ships, known as marus, and up to 100 aircraft were sunk in Truk Lagoon. These massive wrecks, ranging from 200 to 500ft in length have been transformed into amazing reefs. Submerged artifacts range from tanks, trucks, and zeros to china, gas masks, saki bottles, and human remains. We hope you enjoy some of the pictures we took during our dives (select the picture to see a larger image)
